Exploring Depression Treatment through Faith
While medications can sometimes alleviate symptoms, Dr. Greg Gifford, who appeared on Blaze TV with host Allie Beth Stuckey, advocates for looking to God as a primary solution for depression and feelings of hopelessness. He emphasizes, “I am not suggesting that depression doesn’t exist. I’m not denying anxiety either.”
Gifford underlines the importance of understanding the root causes of depression, mentioning various physiological issues that can play a role, such as vitamin deficiencies and thyroid problems. He also refers to potential growths or cysts on the brain that might impact one’s emotional state.
However, he acknowledges that physical issues aren’t the only contributors to mental health struggles. “If my health checks out fine, maybe I should reflect on my thoughts. What am I focusing on? Have there been significant life changes that might lead to these feelings?” he suggests. This exploration, he argues, can lead to a more psychological understanding of one’s struggles.
Gifford believes that hope rests in recognizing God’s nature and promises, asserting, “We want you to know that God is faithful.” He draws from 2 Corinthians 1, emphasizing that God offers comfort. “Even if you’re in a tough spot, He can uplift you from despair.”
Furthermore, he contrasts this divine hope with the limitations of antidepressants. “Antidepressants don’t provide this kind of hope. We need to concentrate on God’s glory rather than getting fixated on our problems or the allure of medication.”
Stuckey adds that focusing excessively on one’s own troubles can exacerbate feelings of depression. She cites author Abigail Shrier’s argument that asking individuals about their feelings daily may actually increase their distress. Gifford agrees, noting that a self-centered perspective can deepen one’s misery.
