Kim Kardashian Reflects on Met Gala Regret
When Kim Kardashian thinks about her experience at the 2022 Met Gala, her regret isn’t what you might expect.
This high-profile event saw her don an archival dress, specifically the memorable beaded tank gown that Marilyn Monroe wore while singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy back in 1962.
In a post-credits confessional from Episode 6 of *The Kardashians* on Hulu, she reveals what she would change if she could rewind to that moment.
Kardashian, now 45, wishes she’d kept her natural dark brunette hair instead of dying it blonde. The goal was to honor Monroe, not compete with her.
“I’m not sure why everyone said, ‘Don’t wear Marilyn’s hair, you’ll just look like a wax figure,'” she shared. “We just thought, you know, blonde seemed right. Maybe we should have embraced darker hair like Jackie O.”
Ultimately, she and her hairstylist Chris Appleton settled on the blonde look, but she admits she had hesitations.
Even now, years later, she still grapples with that choice. “Honestly, I Photoshopped it about 500 times afterward trying to see how it would look. Want to see?” she asked, pulling up images on her phone to share with the crew. “Should I have stuck with the blonde for a Marilyn vibe or gone darker like Jackie O? Both would have worked!”
The 2022 Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art had a theme centered on American fashion, which prompted her to choose such a significant piece.
However, her decision sparked considerable backlash, as she wore a gown taken directly from a public display case.
This particular gown, famously showcased in Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, was auctioned off for over $5 million. Kardashian eventually switched to a replica for the after-party, but it’s rumored that the original dress suffered some damage that night during her photoshoot.
Ripley’s has denied any damage occurred.
Despite the controversy surrounding her appearance, the color of her hair remains Kardashian’s most significant regret from that evening.
