Chiefs facing potential playoff elimination for the first time in 11 years amid injury worries

Things are looking quite tense in Kansas City.

The Chiefs have dropped to a 6-6 record after their loss to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, which has put them in a precarious situation regarding playoff hopes.

Following the 31-28 defeat on Thursday, the Chiefs find themselves in ninth place in the AFC standings, trailing the 7-4 Bills, Jaguars, and Chargers by two games and 1.5 overall.

Each of these teams has already defeated the Chiefs this season, which, understandably, adds to the frustration for a squad that has reached the Super Bowl for three consecutive years.

“We honestly just need to win every game from here on out, and hope it’s enough,” said quarterback Patrick Mahomes post-game, as it became clear that the Chiefs might miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

The playoff path seems even tougher now, as injuries are starting to pile up for the Chiefs, and they really need to be focused during this crucial stretch.

Rookie left tackle Josh Simmons, who was brought in to shore up a shaky offensive line, suffered a dislocated and fractured wrist against the Cowboys, likely sending him to injured reserve. It’s just one more obstacle in an already challenging landscape.

Guard Trey Smith is sidelined with an ankle injury, and tackle Ja’Wuan Taylor has also left the game due to an arm injury.

With multiple starters missing from the offensive line, Mahomes’ capability to perform at his usual high level is under serious threat.

The AFC is packed with strong contenders, so the Chiefs will need to either win or come close to that mark to keep their playoff hopes alive. Even hitting ten wins may not secure them a playoff spot.

Remarkably, Kansas City has reached the playoffs every season since Mahomes became the starter back in 2025.

“We’re about to face a number of really good teams,” Mahomes noted. “We have to win them all to clinch a playoff spot.”

Looking ahead, the Chiefs have a tough home game against the Texans, who are known for having the top pass rush in the league. With Kansas City’s offensive line struggling, this matchup doesn’t inspire confidence.

Houston currently sits just ahead of the Chiefs in the AFC standings and is favored against the Colts this weekend.

After the Texans, Kansas City faces the Chargers at home, then the Titans, Broncos (also at home), and finally the Raiders. The pressure is palpable, and the team’s fans may find themselves hitting the panic button in the days to come.
