Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin’s Future in Question

The situation surrounding Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin has taken a new turn.

Florida State has decided to pull Kiffin’s name from consideration, citing unusual communication patterns from him and a belief that he might be exploring other opportunities, as reported by ESPN.

The University of Florida is also said to be moving away from pursuing Kiffin, but there’s a sense of hope as they have interviewed about ten candidates for the head coaching position after dismissing Billy Napier in October.

Rumor has it that the Gators are now looking at Tulane head coach John Sumrall, with a decision anticipated on Sunday.

ESPN mentioned that Florida State made a strong effort to recruit Kiffin, proposing a contract that would position him among the top earners in college football, complete with substantial incentives.

If Kiffin opts for Florida, he finds himself weighing choices between continuing at LSU or remaining at Ole Miss.

Yahoo Sports reported that LSU, having parted ways with Brian Kelly in late October, is currently in discussions to present Kiffin with a seven-year deal worth around $90 million.

Kiffin had a meeting with Ole Miss officials last week regarding his future plans and is expected to announce his decision following Friday’s Egg Bowl matchup against Mississippi State.

Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Keith Carter, mentioned in a statement that he and Kiffin have had constructive talks about his prospects at Ole Miss, emphasizing the significance of the ongoing season.

Interestingly, both LSU and Florida State reportedly arranged for Kiffin’s family to visit Baton Rouge and Gainesville, though Kiffin himself did not accompany them on these trips.

As news of Florida’s developments surfaced, it coincided with the start of the Egg Bowl, during which the Rebels managed a 21-10 lead at halftime.

Before kickoff, Kiffin claimed that a fan from Mississippi State had broken into the Ole Miss locker room and stolen the jersey of starting quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, an incident captured on video.

Throughout his six-season tenure with the Rebels, Kiffin has maintained a 54-19 record and has led the team to bowl games in each of his first five years in Oxford.

He was appointed as Ole Miss’ head coach in December 2019 after serving as the offensive coordinator at Alabama from 2014 to 2016 under Nick Saban.

Since Kiffin’s arrival, the Rebels have distinguished themselves as a leading team in total offense in college football.
