Kiffin Reflects on Departure from Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin recently shared his thoughts on leaving Ole Miss, five months after the fact. He mentioned that the way he exited was far from ideal.

During his six-year tenure, Kiffin transformed the Rebels into a competitive squad within the SEC. Yet, when LSU reached out to him last December, that success wasn’t enough to keep him in Oxford.

This led to a contentious situation regarding his departure. Kiffin wanted to coach the team all the way through to the College Football Playoff but ultimately decided to step away before the postseason.

On the podcast “Pardon My Take,” Kiffin reflected on how he might have approached things differently: “If it were me, I would have just walked in and said, ‘Okay, I’m leaving.'” He expressed gratitude for his time at Ole Miss, acknowledging the effort he put into building the team.

Kiffin, now 51, faced challenges with the Ole Miss athletic department during this transition, as he aimed to guide a team focused on a national title. However, the school chose defensive coordinator Pete Golding to take over instead.

The aftermath of Kiffin’s departure was somewhat awkward for everyone involved, especially the players. He remarked on how this led to a chain of events that influenced team dynamics, noting, “After that, team meetings went back to normal, and all the things that went along with that.” With the appointment of Golding, Kiffin was sidelined from the games he had hoped to attend.

Under Golding’s leadership, Ole Miss made an impressive run, reaching the CFP semifinals before suffering a close defeat to Miami. Meanwhile, Kiffin prepared for his own journey in Baton Rouge, having officially taken over LSU on December 1, 2025. He secured a top transfer quarterback, Sam Leavitt from Arizona State, marking a strong addition to his new team.

Looking ahead, Kiffin will face Ole Miss again when he returns to Vought-Hemingway Stadium for a much-anticipated match in prime time.
