Stanford brings in ex-teammate of Andrew Luck as coach

Stanford Football Announces New Head Coach

Stanford University has appointed Tavita Pritchard as the new head coach for its football program.

The decision was made on Friday, with Pritchard currently serving as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders.

In a statement, Stanford general manager Andrew Luck highlighted the importance of leadership in college football, emphasizing the need for figureheads who can inspire teams, recruit talent, and forge connections.

“Tavita Pritchard is the right head coach at the right time,” Luck stated, asserting that Pritchard is well-equipped to lay the groundwork for the upcoming season and guide Stanford football into a promising new chapter. He described Pritchard as a “culture builder” and a dedicated leader committed to the success of Stanford’s student-athletes.

Luck’s enthusiasm was evident when he said, “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Tavita, Caroline, and their family to campus.”

Pritchard, a graduate of Stanford from 2009, spent over a decade there in various coaching roles before moving to Washington. He expressed gratitude for returning, noting, “Stanford is a unique place,” and indicated a clear vision for building a strong team that emphasizes hard work and camaraderie.

Pritchard’s connection to the program runs deep; he was a quarterback for the Cardinal, starting for two seasons before being succeeded by Andrew Luck in 2009.

He’s expected to formally transition to Stanford following the upcoming Commanders game against the Broncos. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn shared confidence in Pritchard’s abilities, praising his collaborative approach and strong work ethic. Quinn stated, “Tavita will be an exceptional head coach, well-suited for Stanford.”

This hire is particularly significant as it marks Andrew Luck’s first major decision as general manager after taking on the role in November. The move comes in the wake of the firing of former head coach Troy Taylor in March amid allegations of staff mistreatment. Frank Reich stepped in as interim coach during a challenging season that saw the Cardinal heading into their final game against Notre Dame with a 4-7 record.
