Is Tommy DeVito a Snitch?
Tommy DeVito, once a beloved figure in North Jersey, was signed off waivers from the Giants by the Patriots after training camp. As the backup quarterback, he’s set to sit out his 13th consecutive game against his former team on Monday.
Currently, he’s listed as the third quarterback, following Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs.
There’s been no fanfare in Boston’s North End or throngs of autograph seekers this time around, a stark contrast to the enthusiasm when DeVito played for the Giants and carved out a niche among Italian American fans.
“I really enjoyed my time there,” DeVito told MassLive.com. “Back then, it was ‘Go Giants,’ but now it’s all about the ‘Go Pats.’ I hope we come out on top.”
A little twist in the story, right?
Could DeVito possibly spill the beans about the Giants? Well, in the sports world, anything can happen.
“You can offer insights about player injuries and share your thoughts now and then,” he mentioned, while politely declining an interview request via a team spokesperson. “I will do my best to assist.”
It seems Jameis Winston believes DeVito’s already played a pivotal role in helping Maye grow into a star.
“When Tommy DeVito enters the room, you get something special,” Winston joked. “Having him around automatically boosts your street cred.”
This offseason saw Jackson Dart, Winston, and Russell Wilson come on board with the Giants, which unfortunately made DeVito expendable. He could have landed on the practice squad after clearing waivers, but he caught the Patriots’ eye during the last preseason game.
DeVito, who will be a restricted free agent next season, posted a 3-5 record with eight touchdown completions and three interceptions while with New York.
“I believe DeVito is a starter in the league,” said interim coach Mike Kafka. “He consistently brought energy and stepped up when it mattered, winning crucial games.”
On the injury front, DT Dexter Lawrence (elbow) and CB Paulson Adebo (knee) are expected to play, while OLB Kayvon Thibodeau (shoulder) is set to miss his third game in a row.
Will he potentially sit out the rest of the season? “It’s too early to determine that,” Kafka replied. “He’s working hard on his recovery, and our medical team is on it.” Meanwhile, CB Corey Black (biceps), LB Swayze Bozeman (hip), OLB Victor Dimukeje (knee), and LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (neck/knee) are labeled as questionable.
After Kafka promoted Charlie Bullen as the replacement for the recently fired Shane Bowen, Andre Patterson, defensive line coach, was no longer considered for the interim defensive coordinator role.
Patterson reflected on the situation, stating, “I’ve always been loyal to Shane. My primary focus is on how to keep our players motivated and ready.” He expressed acceptance of the decisions made by management, emphasizing his long experience in the field.
