Record Revenues for Global Arms Manufacturers in 2024
According to recent industry analysis released Monday, global arms companies achieved unprecedented revenues in 2024, driven by ongoing proxy conflicts worldwide.
The top 100 weapons manufacturers earned $679 billion in 2024, reflecting a 5.9% increase from the previous year, as reported by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). This marks the highest revenue ever recorded for arms manufacturers, indicating that large-scale conflicts are creating substantial demand for military equipment.
“The rise in total revenue for the top 100 companies in 2024 primarily stems from increased sales by firms in Europe and the U.S.,” SIPRI noted in their report. Interestingly, all regions analyzed showed year-over-year growth, except for Asia and Oceania, where there was a slight decline attributed mainly to falling revenue from Chinese companies.
SIPRI also highlighted that Chinese arms manufacturers experienced a notable 10% drop in reported revenues from 2023 to 2024. In contrast, Japan’s arms industry saw a remarkable 40% increase, marking the largest growth among all regions surveyed.
U.S. companies, particularly, dominated the revenue lists, with Lockheed Martin topping the chart at $64.65 billion in arms sales for 2024. Raytheon Technologies, Northrop Grumman, and BAE Systems were also significant contributors, following closely behind.
Interestingly, the Czechoslovakia Group reported a staggering 193% increase in sales year-on-year, largely due to their crucial role in providing arms and ammunition to Ukraine. In a related development, the Pentagon contracted one of the group’s subsidiaries to establish a new ammunition factory in the U.S., aimed at replenishing supplies depleted by aid to Ukraine.
“In 2024, global demand for military equipment surged, predominantly due to escalating geopolitical tensions, bolstering the growth in revenues observed in 2023,” the report stated. “More than three-quarters of the top 100 companies (77) saw their arms revenue rise in 2024, with 42 of them reporting double-digit growth.”
