Wedding News Prematurely Announced
On a recent episode of “Today,” Reba McEntire, 70, had to clarify her relationship status live on air after co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, 53, mistakenly referred to her as married to Rex Lynn. Guthrie had commented, “That’s where you met your husband too. So, Rex, good job Rex…”
McEntire quickly interrupted, saying, “Now, wait a minute. Before you all get pissed off at home, we’re just getting engaged.”
Following the mix-up, Guthrie apologized, emphasizing, “I have to fix that or families are going to say, ‘Wait, you didn’t tell us?!'”
During this segment, McEntire was promoting the NBC show “Happy’s Place,” which also stars Lynn. The sitcom, now in its second season, tells the story of a woman (played by McEntire) who inherits a bar after her father passes away and discovers she has a secret half-sister (played by Belissa Escobedo) co-owning the bar as well.
Lynn, 69, was present in the studio, looking a bit puzzled at the “husband” comment but soon smiling.
McEntire expressed her joy about working alongside her fiancé, saying it’s “a lot of fun.” She personally finds Lynn to be quite the workaholic, adding that he enjoys rehearsals. “I don’t really participate in the rehearsal part of it, so he really makes sure that I know my lines and I’m ready on tape day. We have a lot of fun. I’m so grateful to be able to go to work together, work together, and go home together,” she shared.
Previously, McEntire was married to Charles Battles from 1976 to 1987, and then to Narvel Blackstock from 1989 to 2015, with whom she has one son, Shelby Blackstock, 35. She was also a stepmother to Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson’s late ex-husband, who passed away from cancer in August at 48.
During her “Today” appearance, McEntire also confirmed that she and Lynn plan to get officially engaged in December 2024. “A lot of people didn’t know. When he asked me to marry him, it was Christmas Eve a year ago. We intended to announce it when we got back to Los Angeles, but then there was a fire, and there wasn’t a moment to celebrate considering the devastating circumstances others faced,” she explained.
They held off on sharing the news, but during an interview at the Emmy Awards, when a reporter called Lynn her “fiancé,” McEntire chose not to correct her, thinking, “it sounded like a good thing to me.”
