Karen Bass makes a remarkable mistake during the live Los Angeles mayoral debate

Fire Controversy for Karen Bass

The term “fire” has been quite contentious for Karen Bass throughout the past year.

This issue resurfaced during last night’s debate, where the Los Angeles mayor made a significant blunder. While responding to a question regarding the 2025 Palisades fire, Bass unintentionally said “firefuck” instead of “firetruck.”

Critics quickly seized on this gaffe, suggesting it reflects on her management during the fire and ongoing rebuilding efforts.

One online commenter noted, “The Mayor of Los Angeles just said ‘F the fire’ instead of a fire truck on live TV. Honestly, her decision to leave town before the fire even started is enough reason for her to be removed from office.”

Bass was actually in Ghana when the initial fire broke out, despite having promised not to travel internationally during her term. She departed Los Angeles right as high wind warnings were issued and returned to find the city in flames.

People poked fun at her slip during a critical conversation. One user even remarked, “My kid used to say it that way when he was 2.”

Bass is currently running against Nitya Raman, a left-wing DSA City Council member and former ally turned adversary, as well as Spencer Pratt, a reality television star now in the mayoral race.

Even though Bass leads in polls, Pratt seems focused on catchy advertising and Raman is actively campaigning. Alarmingly, 40% of voters are still undecided, creating uncertainty for Bass.

Moreover, her image among voters is troubling; a majority of them (56%) view her negatively, leaving only 13% with no clear opinion.

Bass previously dealt with controversy by firing the former fire chief and bringing in a new one. She has also faced backlash for a report that seemed designed to downplay the slow response time, aiming to present the city and fire department in a more favorable light. Bass has denied these claims.

One individual referred to Bass’s mistake as “a Freudian slip!” In terms of debate performance, surveys indicated she did not fare well; an NBC poll revealed that a whopping 88% of respondents believed Pratt won the debate, while Bass and Raman garnered just 7% and 5%, respectively.
