Elton John Praises Bipartisanship in AIDS Fight, Calls Trump Potential “Greatest President”
In a recent interview, singer Elton John mentioned that if President Donald Trump manages to eliminate AIDS, he could be remembered as “one of the greatest presidents of all time.”
During a talk with Variety, John highlighted his AIDS Foundation and shared how he has received support from Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham. He urged the Trump administration to stay committed to the goal of completely eradicating the disease.
“Bipartisanship is common sense,” John remarked. “It’s remarkable that, thanks to medical and scientific progress, we have the chance to cure this disease in our lifetime. If President Trump can eliminate AIDS, that would certainly enhance his legacy.”
Trump’s Strategy on Global Health
Recently, the FDA approved a new injection from Gilead Sciences aimed at preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. This vaccine has demonstrated almost complete effectiveness in trials, outperforming earlier treatments.
President Trump has expressed a desire to eradicate the disease by 2030, something he emphasized during his first term.
However, the Trump administration has faced challenges, including plans to cut funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which was part of an initial repeal package. Senate Republicans later agreed to protect that funding.
John has voiced his frustration over barriers that hinder aid for people with HIV, pointing to budget restrictions as a significant issue. “It’s frustrating when you know what needs to be done, but countries aren’t stepping up to help,” he told Variety.
White House Responds
A spokesperson for the White House acknowledged the administration’s engagement in addressing the AIDS epidemic. “Elton John can rest assured that we’re making serious efforts to tackle the issue, both domestically and internationally,” said Press Secretary Khush Desai.
Desai noted collaboration with foreign governments to streamline U.S. health strategies, enhance assistance, and modernize efforts against infectious diseases like HIV.
John has maintained a friendly rapport with Trump over the years and even found humor in being nicknamed “Little Rocket Man” by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a nod to one of John’s songs.
Reflecting on his relationship with Trump, John recounted, “I thought it was amusing. Donald has always been supportive of me and has attended my concerts, so I find that interaction funny and appreciated.”
