Alleged Sinaloa Cartel Leader Killed in Mexico

An individual believed to be a top leader of the Sinaloa cartel, targeted by U.S. authorities for allegedly overseeing a major fentanyl production network, was killed by Mexican military forces on Sunday.

Pedro Inzunza Coronel, also known as “El Pichon,” reportedly confronted a member of the Mexican Navy during a drug raid in Sinaloa, as noted by Mexico’s Security Secretary, Omar García Harfuch.

While Harfuch mentioned that Coronel “lost his life” during this confrontation, the detailed circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

Earlier this year, in May, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted Coronel and his father, Pedro Inzunza Noriega, on various charges, including narcoterrorism and drug trafficking, linked to their activities with the now-defunct Beltrán Leyva organization, which was part of the Sinaloa cartel.

The father-son duo is accused of smuggling thousands of kilograms of fentanyl into the U.S., while the Mexican authorities confiscated more than 1.65 tons of fentanyl from their operations. This seizure is reportedly the largest amount of fentanyl ever taken worldwide, according to the Department of Justice.

This indictment was described as a “first in the nation,” facilitated by an executive order from President Trump that designated the Sinaloa Cartel as a foreign terrorist entity.

The Justice Department also shared images of the seized narcotics associated with the pair, showing small blue pills and large quantities of cocaine, some of which featured well-known brands on the packaging.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, praised the operation, highlighting the gravity of additional accusations against Coronel, such as murder and torture related to drug trafficking. He expressed optimism, stating, “These results reflect what can be achieved when the nation works together against those who pose a threat to our people. Justice will prevail!”
