Two Dutch brothers are facing trial in connection with the honor killing of their teenage sister from Syria, whose family claims she embraced a Western lifestyle.
As reported by the NL Times, the brothers are believed to have played a role in the drowning death of their sister, Ryan Al-Najjar.
Mohamed, 23, and Muhanad, 25, are implicated in the murder, alongside their father Khalid, who is identified as the primary suspect but has reportedly fled to Syria after the incident. It’s said that he will be tried in absentia.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM) has classified Ryan’s death as an honor killing, stating that the young woman was killed due to her dating, perceived “Western” behavior, and because she “shamed” her family.
Prosecutors allege that Khalid directed his sons to pick up Ryan, take her to a secluded area, and then dispose of her body in the water, fully aware that she wouldn’t survive.
Recommended sentences include 25 years for the father and 20 years each for the brothers. Sentencing is anticipated for early January.
Ryan’s remains were discovered in a lake in northern Netherlands, with her hands and feet bound. An autopsy indicated signs of both strangulation and drowning.
A report mentioned that DNA evidence matching her father’s was found beneath her fingernails, suggesting a struggle occurred.
Authorities indicated that the teenager was targeted for refusing to wear a veil in public and for sharing videos of herself without it and wearing makeup on social media.
The Ministry of Justice and Security highlighted the complexities in extraditing the father for trial, although Syria’s Ministry of Justice remarked that their legal system is now ready to address such matters.
There are ongoing discussions around Islam in the Netherlands, which has seen varying public sentiments, including calls from political figures in the past to limit Islamic influence.
