New York’s Incoming Mayor Comments on Chuck Schumer
Zoran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, recently shared a light moment in an interview, highlighting how much he resembles his father. However, when pressed about Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, he sidestepped giving a clear opinion on whether Schumer should resign.
On a recent episode of Mehdi Hasan’s podcast, Mamdani was asked several times about Schumer’s leadership role in the Democratic Party and if it was time for him to step down. Rather than addressing the questions directly, Mamdani shifted focus, emphasizing the urgency of serving New Yorkers right from the start.
“I think it’s essential to concentrate on this transition and start delivering for the people,” he stated, before expressing his views on the government shutdown. He noted the recent agreement was unfavorable, saying, “It doesn’t make sense to fight for an extension.”
Hasan interjected, pointing out Mamdani’s new prominence in national Democratic discussions, which raised expectations for him to share his thoughts on Schumer’s effectiveness. Yet, Mamdani refrained from criticizing Schumer specifically, choosing instead to voice his discontent about the Senate’s decision regarding the shutdown.
When Hasan inquired about Mamdani’s campaign efforts against a primary challenger to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Mamdani took a moment to share a picture of his father with Hasan, joking that his father bore a resemblance to Schumer.
Despite growing criticism towards Schumer and Jeffries from the more progressive factions within the party, Mamdani has not publicly called for their resignations. In fact, he even advised City Councilman Chi Ose against running in a primary against Jeffries.
In another aspect of the conversation, Mamdani shared his belief that it’s not the right time to engage in primaries, suggesting that the focus should be on policies that promote affordability in the city.
