Sean 'Diddy' Combs criticizes 50 Cent's 'shameful' documentary 'Reckoning' from prison

Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently incarcerated, has criticized 50 Cent’s Netflix documentary series titled “Sean Combs: The Reckoning.”

A representative for Combs described the Netflix project as a “shameful hit,” stating that it relies on unauthorized, stolen footage. They emphasized that for years, Combs has been collecting his own footage to share his unique story. The spokesperson’s comments were relayed to Variety.

They pointed out that the teaser released by “GMA” confirms Netflix’s infringement by using footage without permission. The spokesperson firmly stated, “Netflix’s misappropriation of that work is fundamentally unfair and illegal.”

The representative went on to claim that Netflix seems eager to sensationalize Combs’ life, ignoring the truth in pursuit of profit, especially amid a media frenzy. They noted that private footage was presented out of context, including discussions with his attorney meant for confidentiality. “No rights in that material were ever transferred to Netflix or any third party,” they added.

It was also surprising, according to Combs’ camp, that Netflix granted creative control to 50 Cent, who has long been an adversary of Combs and has previously criticized him.

Combs’ spokesperson further expressed that the collaboration with Netflix felt like a “personal betrayal,” especially since Combs has held a long-standing respect for the platform’s CEO, Ted Sarandos. The rep noted that partnering with someone who has publicly criticized him for years feels like a deeply personal affront.

Meanwhile, the documentary’s director, Alexandria Stapleton, insisted that the footage was legally obtained and claimed that they had reached out to Combs’ legal team several times for comments, but did not receive any responses.

The official trailer for the four-part documentary was released, showcasing Combs’ contentious life as a music icon and convict. It opens with distressing footage of him just days before his arrest in September 2024. “We have to find someone who has worked on some of the dirtiest business to help us,” he’s heard saying during a phone conversation, visibly anxious.

Notably, Combs was found guilty in July of two counts related to prostitution but was acquitted of more serious charges involving sex trafficking. He is currently serving a 50-month sentence and is set to be released in June 2028.

“Sean Combs: The Reckoning” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
