Adam Thielen was mistreated by the Vikings before they made amends.

Adam Thielen’s return to the Minnesota Vikings was quite a touching moment, especially in a sport that can often feel unforgiving. He expressed his gratitude to the Carolina Panthers for making this return possible, sharing on social media that his son, perhaps, might shed a tear when he hears the news after school. It truly felt like coming “home” for him after his time in Charlotte.

However, just three months later, things changed rapidly. The pleasant atmosphere shifted dramatically when the Vikings unexpectedly released Thielen after a tough loss. While he wished to join a competitive team, the coaching staff’s decisions this season concerning Thielen seem fundamentally misguided.

When Thielen was traded, the arrangement appeared logical. He could start alongside Justin Jefferson, and once Jordan Addison returned from his two-game suspension, Thielen could easily shift into a slot position or stay outside. This would diversify the passing game while bringing in a veteran presence capable of helping a young quarterback like Bryce Young, which is what made Thielen valuable in Carolina.

The Vikings traded their 2026 fourth and fifth-round picks to acquire Thielen and a fifth-rounder from the Panthers. Delving into the various issues facing the Vikings this season is unnecessary, but clearly, they haven’t been competitive. What’s perplexing is that Minnesota never really made an effort to integrate Thielen into their offensive strategy. As struggles piled on, Thielen became less and less significant to their game plan.

Initially, it seemed Thielen had the opportunity to end his career in a playoff-bound team, but instead, he faced the reality of being on the open market. His stats this season included just 18 targets, 8 receptions, and 69 yards.

The stark decline in his production feels like a real slap in the face. Running back Aaron Jones received 12 more targets, showing that Thielen’s role was severely diminished. Meanwhile, younger players like Jalen Naylor stepped in and performed significantly better, even as Thielen’s presence faded into the background.

This entire situation feels pretty disrespectful. It serves as an example of how a struggling team can mishandle a veteran player’s exit during a rough season. Thielen has been overlooked not once, but twice by the Vikings’ leadership—first during a cap-clearing move in 2023, then later as he was brought back but left out of the game plan. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah acknowledged Thielen’s contributions at his release two years ago, saying he had become a part of the Vikings’ legacy.

Thielen’s motivation has been straightforward—he believed in his own abilities even when the team struggled. He demonstrated this with a productive 2023 season in Carolina, where he accomplished a thousand-yard performance despite injury setbacks. Had he stayed there, the Panthers might’ve emerged as leaders in their division instead of facing some early season setbacks due in part to injuries.

He returned home only to realize that his presence wasn’t truly needed. It raises questions about why the Vikings brought him back if they weren’t planning to utilize his skills. Was it really that coach Kevin O’Connell couldn’t see how Thielen could help with the quarterback’s struggles?

While the Vikings allowed Thielen to pursue playoff opportunities, it doesn’t negate the fact that he was treated poorly in the process. The upside is that he might find a team looking for a veteran contribution, but which team will that be?

His next destination is crucial. Though the Patriots could benefit from a reliable short-range target like Thielen, the situation remains uncertain. They currently rely on tight end Hunter Henry in similar roles, yet there’s potential for Thielen to make impactful plays that could elevate the Patriots to Super Bowl contenders.

While the Bills are looking for receiver assistance, their roster seems constrained, with many solid players already in short situations. Thus, it may not be the right fit for Thielen.

Then, there are the Baltimore Ravens. They need to acknowledge that Rashod Bateman hasn’t lived up to expectations, which leaves them needing a dependable receiver. With two great tight ends and a quarterback in Lamar Jackson who excels at improvising, adding someone like Thielen could really benefit the team.

It would be both poetic and peculiar if Thielen ended up back with the Panthers. They seem stable at wide receiver but might appreciate a consistent target in short-yardage situations. The emergence of rookie Tetailoa McMillian adds excitement, but the team could still benefit from Thielen’s experience if no better opportunities come along.
