NYU Student Allegedly Assaulted on Her Way to Class
A college student from New York University (NYU) was reportedly assaulted while heading to class, a situation captured by surveillance footage.
Amelia Lewis discussed the incident publicly on Monday. In videos shared on her social media, she recounts how a man chased her across a street and struck her from behind as she walked on Broadway.
“I turned around and saw this older white man, and just as he did, he grabbed my hair, pulled me down, and threw me to the ground,” Lewis explained.
The footage shows other girls helping her after she fell. Lewis mentioned that the video was obtained by a friend from a liquor store nearby. She described her attacker as a tall man with long brown hair and a beard, wearing gray sweatpants and a black down jacket, with a blue towel around his neck.
She reported the incident to NYU’s security, who indicated they would pass the footage along to law enforcement.
“I just want to stress how wrong this is,” she expressed. “As an NYU student, I shouldn’t feel afraid to walk to my 9:30 a.m. class. It’s appalling that individuals like this are free to roam and target young women.” She also mentioned that she heard the same man had assaulted someone a month earlier.
“Honestly, I’m still in shock, but it’s infuriating that events like this occur in our city. We need to take a hard look at who we’re voting for and supporting. New York requires action, and it feels like we’re not getting what we need,” she added.
The NYPD has not yet responded regarding the status or potential charges against the suspect.
Lewis also cautioned fellow female students to remain vigilant while out and about in the city. She referred to the experience as one of the most frightening moments of her life. “It’s surreal,” she remarked. “You hear about such things happening to others, but you never expect it will happen to you.”
