Recent photographs have emerged showing a cheerful doctor from Simi Valley, Dr. Eric Cordes, 63, along with his wife, Vicki Schiller, 66, who is a well-known spin instructor and recent grandmother, just before they were tragically shot in their home’s garage.
The couple was killed around noon Sunday at their residence located at the end of a peaceful cul-de-sac on Hawks Bill Place.
After being shot, they were transported to the hospital but unfortunately did not survive, leaving a significant void in their community and raising questions about who could have wished to harm such a loving couple.
Approximately three hours later, authorities discovered a burnt-out Honda Civic about 110 miles from the couple’s home. A charred body was found inside the vehicle but has not yet been identified. A gun was also recovered from this scene, as mentioned by Simi Valley Police Sergeant Rick Morton.
Although the identity of the deceased in the vehicle remains unclear, police have established a connection between the black Honda Civic and the murder.
Witnesses in the area reported seeing a white man, thought to resemble the couple’s son-in-law, just before the shooting took place.
Mr. Morton stated, “We believe the victim was targeted,” emphasizing that they do not consider this a random attack.
The residents of this quiet neighborhood were taken aback by the brutal murder. Many shared their memories of the beloved couple on social media after the news broke.
One local, Raul Gomez, expressed his shock, recalling that he had participated in a spin class led by Vicki earlier in the year. He mentioned how Vicki had encouraged him and his partner, Laney, to become spin instructors over two decades ago. “Our hearts are so devastated. She had recently become a grandmother,” he added.
Dr. Cordes, described as a highly esteemed radiologist, dedicated nearly 30 years to serving his community with compassion and excellence, according to his employer, Adventist Health Simi Valley.
The organization expressed its sorrow over the loss, stating, “Our hearts are with his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of working with him as we grieve this shocking loss.”
While the motive behind the attack remains uncertain, police have assured the community that there is no ongoing threat and reiterated that this appears to be a targeted incident.
