Feud Among Republicans Over Defense Policy Bill

A conflict has ignited between a Republican congressman, who is running for governor of New York, and the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson.

Rep. Elise Stefanik has accused Johnson of misleading the public regarding the inclusion of certain provisions in this year’s defense policy bill. She stated her position clearly: “This bill is dead on arrival unless this provision is added when it gets out of committee.”

Her proposal would mandate that the FBI inform Congress when an investigation into a federal office candidate begins. Stefanik has warned that she would work to repeal the National Defense Authorization Act if her demands aren’t met.

“These provisions are meant to enhance accountability and transparency to prevent the misuse of government power, and they have already passed through the House Intelligence Committee before,” she expressed on social media. She further questioned the Republican party’s ability to address what she sees as a major issue of corruption and government misuse. “If we can’t take action against this, what are we really doing?”

Stefanik’s frustration continued as she criticized other Republicans for aligning with Democrats on this matter, calling it “shameful” that they allow themselves to be influenced by the so-called deep state.

On Tuesday, during a briefing, she again took issue with Johnson. “This bill is DOA unless this provision is added.”

In response, Johnson defended himself to reporters, calling the accusations “a lie.” He expressed confusion over why Stefanik hadn’t contacted him and mentioned he had reached out via text. “I think she’s upset that one of her provisions didn’t make it into the NDAA,” he noted, explaining that approval from other committees is necessary for the inclusion of specific provisions, and theirs was not accepted.

“I had no involvement in that and am willing to collaborate with her on this,” he stated.

Stefanik later countered by claiming Johnson was supporting Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin from Maryland. “Another lie from the Speaker,” she tweeted, asserting that the provision in question is essential to combat deep state corruption.

Stefanik is currently running against incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, but recent polling indicates she might be struggling in a competitive race. One poll shows her slightly ahead, while others suggest Hochul maintains a solid lead.
