Federal Judge Blocks Funding Cuts to Planned Parenthood

A federal judge in Boston has issued a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration’s attempt to cut federal funding for family planning programs across 22 states. This ruling came on Tuesday, led by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani.

Judge Talwani sided with a coalition of Democratic state attorneys general who challenged certain provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which the president approved in July. She indicated that the lawsuit is likely to succeed if it receives adequate judicial consideration, but she’s temporarily pausing her injunction to allow the administration time to appeal.

The judge had previously blocked cuts to abortion funding in July; however, an appeals court later permitted those cuts to continue during ongoing legal proceedings. This earlier ruling faced criticism from pro-life advocates, including Lila Rose of the group Live Action, who labeled it an “unjust judicial move.”

According to family planning organizations, at least 20 clinics have shut down in the wake of the funding cuts, and they project that up to 200 centers could close if the cuts remain in effect.

Alexis McGill Johnson, CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, emphasized that these funding decisions would ultimately limit women’s access to essential medical care. “This lawsuit is about ensuring that patients who rely on Medicaid for birth control, cancer screenings, and testing for sexually transmitted diseases can continue to receive these services at local family planning health centers. We are determined to make this clear in court,” Johnson expressed in July.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has been outspoken against the president, celebrated the ruling. She stated, “We have won a court order to stop the federal government from playing politics with the health care system and defunding the family planning system.” James vowed to continue litigating to safeguard medical and reproductive freedoms for New Yorkers against what she termed unconstitutional attacks.

Judge Talwani, appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2013, had also previously blocked cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program during the government shutdown in October—leading to criticisms of Democrats for not resolving the shutdown situation.
