WFAN’s Future Uncertain Amid Craig Carton’s Return
On Wednesday’s show, Sal Licata and Brandon Tierney opened the discussion about WFAN’s uncertain future. Reports indicate that Craig Carton is nearing a deal that would bring him back to the network for a third time, taking over the afternoon drive slot. This development comes after months of speculation about his return, with Licata previously asserting, “You’re not going to take my place.”
However, it remains unclear what the future holds for Licata and Tierney, especially since Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber have been reassigned to the daytime slot. Licata reflected on the situation, noting it was surprising how things had unfolded, particularly following his earlier comments about Carton. “Talk about things that have backfired so far,” he said during Wednesday’s opening. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue their show for as long as they can.
Tierney addressed the decision not to discuss Carton the previous day, stating that they chose to remain professional amid changing circumstances. “Listen, yesterday was a tough situation… we’re not trying to fool anyone,” he said. They acknowledged the reality of Carton’s impending return while also hinting at future discussions about it in later shows.
Amidst this news, some humor emerged as Tierney jokingly questioned if anyone should take Giants GM Joe Schoen’s comments seriously. Licata chimed in, playfully calling for everyone to stay calm about the Giants’ situation.
According to The Athletic, Chris McMonigle is currently expected to partner with Carton when he returns. Carton previously co-hosted a morning show with Boomer Esiason but left the network after being implicated in fraud related to a ticket resale scheme. After serving time in prison, he returned to WFAN, only to leave again earlier this year to focus on a morning FS1 show that was later canceled.
With Keith McPherson’s exit creating an open night slot, there’s speculation that Licata might be considered for that position. “There will definitely come a day when we do this on a bigger scale. This won’t be our last show, I can promise you this,” Tierney remarked, emphasizing their commitment to delivering a quality show.
