Rookie Patriots Running Back Highlights Global Persecution of Christians
TreVeyon Henderson, a rookie running back for the New England Patriots, made a statement about the global persecution of Christians during a game on Monday night.
The Virginia native chose to express his faith through the NFL’s My Cause, My Cleats initiative, which allows players to showcase a cause or nonprofit of their choice via their cleats during games.
“I am living proof of what God’s mercy can do,” he proclaimed.
During the “Monday Night Football” event, Henderson rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries as the Patriots defeated the New York Giants, 33-15. He wore special cleats designed to honor persecuted Christians globally.
In collaboration with the World Christian Relief Fund, Mr. Henderson promoted the message to pray for persecuted Christians. His cleats displayed Scripture from Matthew 5:10: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
The cleat design included images of a cross and praying hands, alongside drops of blood, signifying Christ and martyrs. It also featured a map illustrating regions where Christians face persecution, including parts of Central America, Southeast Asia, and many areas in Africa.
On the same day, Mr. Henderson shared a video on social media from Global Christian Relief, urging, “Will you stand with them?” The video highlighted the struggles faced by Christians around the world.
Henderson has actively expressed his faith, even during his college days at Ohio State University, where he often shared inspirational messages. In a post from July, he reflected, “I am living proof of what God’s mercy can do.” He noted his past mistakes but emphasized how faith transformed him, citing Ephesians 2:4-5 to underline God’s mercy.
Support for persecuted Christians has gained traction recently, with high-profile backing from figures like rapper Nicki Minaj. At the beginning of November, she shared an appreciation for the freedom to worship in the U.S. and highlighted the dangers faced by Christians in Nigeria, noting that churches were burned and families were devastated.
