Pastor shares news of gender transition — ‘I’m done pretending to be a man’

Pastor Announces Transition to Woman

Pastor Philip Phaneuf of North Chile United Methodist Church in upstate New York recently shared with his congregation that he is transitioning to identify as a woman.

Dressed in a rainbow-colored stole during a late November service, Phaneuf, 51, spoke to church members about his journey.

“I didn’t come into ministry to focus on myself or my life, but sometimes personal matters inevitably intertwine with the church,” he explained, noting that he has removed the beard he once had in his church mugshot. “So, let’s embrace a season of transformation together—for me and for all of us.”

He compared this self-discovery to a significant medical change that could enhance someone’s life experience. “I’m happy to announce that I am transitioning. I affirm my identity as transgender,” Phaneuf said. “To clarify, I’m not becoming a woman; I’m just stopping the act of pretending to be a man.”

Phaneuf described this transition as a “process” of inviting God’s Holy Spirit and urged the congregation to acknowledge their fears about this change.

He reassured them that many aspects of his ministry would remain unchanged, particularly his dedication to spreading “the good news of Jesus Christ.” Church leaders have expressed their desire to refer to him as Philippa Faye Phaneuf and would still like to call him Pastor Phil.

“I don’t think anyone will misgender or mispronounce my name with ill intent,” he remarked to the congregation.

Phaneuf also mentioned that his appearance would evolve, joking that the congregation didn’t choose him for looks anyway. He noted that his voice might be higher and shared that he’s already begun hormone replacement therapy.

The pastor stated that he has received support for his transition from scripture, Methodist theology, district superiors, and the bishop, suggesting that the Bible acknowledges more than one gender. However, he did express that his parents are not supportive and have requested that their stance be communicated.

Additionally, Phaneuf identified as asexual, mentioning he’s been that way for quite some time. “I’m not seeking romance, and that’s perfectly fine!” he said.

Phaneuf also shared a video of his announcement on social media, showcasing a selfie with feminine makeup and earrings.

This announcement has been received warmly by his congregation, he reported. “Since coming out, the response has been overwhelmingly positive!”

Last year, the United Methodist Church updated its policies to better support LGBTQ individuals, recognizing sexuality as a “sacred gift” for all. The church stated, “The United Methodist Church is dedicated to friendship and care for everyone in our community, including LGBTQ individuals.”
