Repeat offender evades jail now faces charges for assaulting another woman

Serial Rapist Charged After Prior Plea Deal

A man has been charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting women in a hotel for several days. Just a few months prior, he avoided prison time for two other assaults, including the rape of a 15-year-old girl at gunpoint.

Abdimahat Bir Mohamed, aged 28, was released following an unexpected plea deal in May in the progressive Hennepin County, Minnesota, as per court records.

His initial arrest was in September when he was accused of strangling and raping a woman he met on Snapchat. However, DNA evidence later connected him to a previous horrific incident involving a teenager.

Despite his serious offenses, he received a deferred sentence in May, which allowed him to evade prison time.

In September, just four months after the deal, he allegedly locked a woman in a Bloomington hotel and assaulted her multiple times, according to legal documents. They reportedly met on Snapchat, after which he took her phone and indicated he wouldn’t let her leave.

The documents reveal that he threatened her and asserted he wasn’t going back. He drove her to a hotel where she was assaulted over several days, until she managed to escape the vehicle and call for assistance.

His arrest, following dealings with a previous victim, ignited widespread anger, even drawing remarks from public figures. Elon Musk expressed his outrage, stating, “Repeat violent offenders must be imprisoned or they will continue to harm innocent people.”

Mohamed’s recent troubles began in May when he faced charges for raping a woman in his Minneapolis apartment. She claimed he strangled her and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t comply with his demands.

Subsequently, his DNA linked him to a 2017 incident where a teenage girl reported being assaulted at gunpoint, initially believing a different man was responsible.

Though he received a three-year sentence for assaulting a 15-year-old boy, the sentence was deferred for five years, resulting in no actual prison time.

Additionally, he was sentenced to five years of probation and 364 days in the Hennepin County Workhouse but received credit for his prior time served.

In 2024, he faced a 14-month prison sentence for sexual assault, but this too was stayed, allowing him to evade imprisonment.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office defended this approach. “Given the challenging circumstances in many criminal sexual conduct cases, these charges were available and appropriate to secure a felony conviction,” said spokesperson Daniel Borgert-Poping.

Currently, Mohamed is being held without bail on his latest rape charge, with his next court appearance scheduled for December 31st.
