On Wednesday, a Russian court handed down an extended sentence to U.S. national Robert Gilman, after finding him guilty of assaulting a prison official. This ruling adds two years to his existing term, which now totals ten years.
The case took place in the Voronezh region, where Gilman is currently incarcerated. Prosecutors concluded that he assaulted two guards, and the court deemed this a new crime deserving of further punishment.
Since his initial arrest in 2022, the charges against Gilman have been progressively increasing, reflecting an ongoing pattern of escalating legal issues. Originally from Dracut, Massachusetts, he first came to authorities’ attention due to a disturbance reported by a passenger while he was intoxicated on a train.
The transport police pulled him off the train in Voronezh because of “petty hooliganism.” Reports from that time noted that he was traveling to replace a damaged passport and appeared heavily intoxicated. Gilman later claimed in court that he suspected his drink had been tampered with.
Following that incident, he was convicted of assaulting a police officer and received a sentence of three and a half years. Prosecutors initially sought a prison term of four and a half years, but it was later extended due to other convictions related to assaults on various prison officials.
His troubles worsened while in custody. In 2024, he was convicted of multiple assaults, resulting in a cumulative sentence of over eight years, with the latest verdict pushing his total to ten years. Some local media reported that Gilman acknowledged certain actions that led to this additional sentence.
During this latest court appearance, he expressed regret for his actions and cited concern over being moved from a more humane detention facility. It’s worth noting that his legal advisor stated there would not be an appeal against the recent ruling.
Currently, Gilman is among at least nine Americans still detained in Russia, even after several high-profile prisoner exchanges in recent years. Supporters back home maintain that he was in poor health during his initial arrest and that the circumstances leading to his actions were somewhat provoked.
