Obama Critiques Politicization of Military
Former President Barack Obama expressed on Monday that there seems to be a “resistance” against the Trump administration’s attempts to politicize the military. He made these remarks during an appearance at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas, marking the launch of the museum’s new lecture series.
During the hour-long event, Obama highlighted a “pretty big breakdown” in several key institutions and suggested that the military was being drawn into “partisan politics.” However, he noted there was pushback within military ranks that might help prevent full politicization.
He stated, “I don’t foresee any politicization of the Department of Justice or the military” and mentioned having seen resistance, especially among military personnel. He reflected on his past experiences, where he had advised other countries against such politicization.
According to Obama, it’s essential for the military to remain apolitical, emphasizing that its loyalty should lie solely with the Constitution rather than with any political party or individual president.
He contrasted his administration’s approach, claiming he earned respect from the military by avoiding political games. While commenting on his entry into office in 2009, he acknowledged not having the backing of the military due to his lack of service. Nonetheless, he recalled that when he was sworn in, military personnel saluted him, affirming that mutual respect was established during his tenure.
In response to Obama’s comments, Pentagon Press Secretary Sean Parnell remarked that the former president had not spoken about the alleged targeting of military conservatives during the Biden administration. Parnell criticized prior administrations for interjecting politics into military matters and noted current efforts to restore a focus on merit within the military.
Congressman Eric Swalwell also added remarks about military officials acting as a “check” against Trump’s orders, suggesting that military personnel felt their importance in maintaining constitutional integrity, despite the shifting political landscape.
The discussion gained further traction after six Democratic lawmakers released a video urging military personnel to resist what they described as “illegal” orders from Trump. This has sparked significant debate about the role of the military in political matters.
