Negotiations between TriHealth and UnitedHealthcare may impact health insurance.

Cincinnati faces a looming health insurance crisis as thousands may need to switch providers or encounter interruptions due to ongoing negotiations between TriHealth and UnitedHealthcare. This situation puts important medical procedures and birth plans at risk. “As it stands, December 31st will mark the final day UnitedHealthcare is in network with TriHealth providers and facilities,” explained Dr. Raymond Metzger from the TriHealth Population Health Organization. Without a swift resolution, approximately 80,000 patients associated with one of the region’s extensive hospital networks will need to make significant changes. “Many patients are currently undergoing treatments, like heart or cancer care, or even dealing with pregnancy, and those issues won’t just end on December 31st,” added Metzger.

The two organizations have been working on a contract for the past year. TriHealth has expressed a desire for fair reimbursement rates from UnitedHealthcare, less bureaucracy, and acknowledgment of their quality of care, which they claim is offered at lower costs compared to other local providers. “The reimbursement from United to other healthcare systems in the area is notably less than what we receive. It’s a significant issue, and we do have cooperative agreements with other entities. Essentially, we’re aiming for fairness,” Metzger noted.

In a response, UnitedHealthcare stated, “TriHealth is seeking a 35% increase, which would render them the most expensive provider in the Cincinnati area—roughly $80 million of the $94 million they demand.” They further emphasized their aim for rate increases that keep TriHealth’s reimbursement competitive within the market. Both companies are hopeful to establish a continuity of care agreement to ensure that severely ill patients can continue with their healthcare provider even if negotiations extend beyond the year’s end. TriHealth remarked that this resolution hinges on UnitedHealthcare’s goodwill and willingness to collaborate.
