Veteran’s Son Celebrates Surprise Fundraiser for Father’s Retirement

Ed Bambas’s son announced that his father can finally retire and enjoy life, thanks to an outpouring of support that raised nearly $1.5 million. The 80-year-old veteran will be surprised with the funds at a special ceremony this Friday at his workplace.

Michael Bambas expressed his gratitude, saying he was deeply touched by the generosity shown after a viral video featured his 88-year-old father discussing his financial hardships. “I know what this means to him and that it’s going to change his life forever,” Michael shared on a Wednesday night.

He added that his father is finally able to enjoy life without the constant worry about finances. “He finally started enjoying life and didn’t have to stress about where his next dollar was coming from.”

Ed gained international sympathy when he met Australian influencer Samuel Wiedenhofer at a Meijer grocery store in Brighton. Having lost his pension and wife, along with facing significant medical expenses, Ed was forced to work as a cashier full-time to make ends meet.

Wiedenhofer’s social media post, which included a GoFundMe page, has helped raise more than $1.443 million as of Monday night.

“Oh my god!” Michael exclaimed, surprised by how much support continues to come in. “It’s just amazing. We’re both pretty surprised at how this has affected people around the world. I think somehow this hits a nerve with people.”

In a heartfelt video that went viral, Ed explained to Wiedenhofer that he retired from General Motors in 1999. Unfortunately, after the company declared bankruptcy in 2012, he lost his pension completely. The emotional toll worsened when his wife’s health declined, forcing him to sell their home to survive. “The thing that hurt me the most was when my wife got really sick,” he recalled, fighting back tears.

After losing his wife Joanne seven years ago, Ed returned to a demanding 40-hour workweek, eventually finding a job at a supermarket 45 miles west of Detroit, where he has been for the last five years. “I’m lucky that God gave me a body strong enough to endure this,” he said when talking about his long shifts.

The fundraising campaign received nearly 50,000 donations from over 36,000 people, including celebrities like Charlie Puth and Russell Dickerson. Michael noted, however, that his father is unaware of the support rallying around him. “He has no idea how much money is in his account. It’s going to be a complete shock to him,” he said.

A heartfelt ceremony is set for Friday evening at Ed’s workplace, where he will receive the funds. Local veterans groups will also be presenting special honors. “Ever since my mother passed away, I have tried to help him as much as I can,” Michael said, relieved about the massive burden that will soon be lifted from his father.

“He will be greatly relieved of all this,” he added, reflecting on the life-changing news.
