Concerns About Safety on U.S. Roads

Regardless of where this finds you, your day likely begins on America’s roads. Maybe it involves dropping off kids at daycare, heading to work, or enjoying a morning coffee. Cyclists navigate these same streets. These routines are grounded in one fundamental idea: those operating heavy commercial vehicles should be trained, vetted, and held accountable.

However, this assumption is beginning to falter, especially with ongoing issues stemming from the challenges of the current administration’s approach to border policies. While former President Trump seeks to address these issues, the road ahead isn’t going to be smooth. The repercussions are evident on our highways.

It’s unfortunate that America’s highways are caught in the crossfire of Washington’s shortcomings—and so are American workers.

A tragic incident in Florida highlights this reality. A 28-year-old man from India reportedly made an illegal U-turn on the turnpike, resulting in three fatalities. This individual is believed to have entered the country illegally, yet he managed to obtain a commercial driver’s license. Similarly, a 21-year-old in California, also said to be undocumented, collided with a semi-truck that was stopped in traffic, taking three more lives on Interstate 10. Authorities noted he crossed the border in 2022, amid the surge of attempts to loosen border restrictions.

These instances are not one-off events. They highlight a systemic issue where there’s a lack of seriousness regarding who is behind the wheel of expensive commercial vehicles.

The trucking industry is grappling with a driver shortage. Instead of increasing wages or revitalizing the once-prestigious positions of truck drivers, many companies are prioritizing profits by hiring undocumented workers who accept lower pay. This choice endangers families on the roads and undermines the earning potential of American truck drivers who adhere to the rules.

Employing undocumented drivers presents two significant problems: it threatens the safety of all motorists and exerts downward pressure on wages for American workers. Flooding the market with illegal labor compromises the livelihoods of those who contribute legally to the economy.

Trucking plays a crucial role in the U.S. economy. Almost everything we own has arrived via truck. Historically, these jobs supported families, yet they are now feeling the adverse effects of policies that overlook the ramifications of illegal employment.

Addressing this issue requires a serious commitment to enforce strict verification processes—no more loopholes and no more automatic licenses issued without evidence of legal status. It’s time to stop ignoring the implications of illegal immigration on public safety and wages.

This isn’t a theoretical discussion. It touches on safety, economic fairness, and the reality that border policies influence our everyday lives, including the safety of our daily commutes.

America’s highways shouldn’t bear the brunt of governmental failures. Likewise, American workers deserve better. Both highways and workers require strong leadership to enforce the regulations that ensure safety and prosperity.
