Similarly, a 21-year-old in California, also said to be undocumented, collided with a semi-truck that was stopped in traffic, taking three more lives on Interstate 10. Authorities noted he crossed the border in 2022, amid the surge of attempts to loosen border restrictions.

These instances are not one-off events. They highlight a systemic issue where there’s a lack of seriousness regarding who is behind the wheel of expensive commercial vehicles.

The trucking industry is grappling with a driver shortage. Instead of increasing wages or revitalizing the once-prestigious positions of truck drivers, many companies are prioritizing profits by hiring undocumented workers who accept lower pay. This choice endangers families on the roads and undermines the earning potential of American truck drivers who adhere to the rules.
