Tragic Incident Amid Immigration Policy Concerns
It seems like we can’t escape these stories. On November 24, a newlywed couple in California lost their lives in a tragic accident caused by an illegal immigrant truck driver who obtained his commercial driver’s license under what many call dangerous policies enacted by Governor Gavin Newsom.
William Carter and Jennifer Lauer were struck by a jackknifed truck driven by Rajinder Kumar, who, despite being in the U.S. illegally, secured a CDL. This situation is as alarming as it sounds.
This incident follows a string of similar events where individuals without the right to be in the country caused fatalities. In August and October, three people died in incidents involving drivers not authorized to be in the U.S., culminating in this recent tragedy of a couple just starting their life together.
Adding to the outrage, President Trump has threatened to withhold $75 million from Pennsylvania over the ongoing scandal surrounding illegal immigrants obtaining CDLs.
What’s incredibly frustrating is that while Americans face strict regulations regarding homebuying, financing, and starting businesses, illegal immigrants seem to face little to no restrictions. It’s a bizarre juxtaposition.
As a New York State CDL holder, I find it hard to wrap my head around how I had to go through extensive paperwork and medical checkups to obtain my license, while illegal immigrants can seemingly just attend a quick “driving school” and leave with their licenses.
To put it bluntly, a CDL is not just any license; it allows individuals to operate large vehicles—often weighing 25,000 pounds or more—that can quickly turn a normal drive into a catastrophe.
Thankfully, the Department of Transportation, led by Sean Duffy, is now aiming to address the issue of these driving schools.
Duffy recently pointed out the reckless practice of allowing poorly trained drivers to operate semi-trucks and other large vehicles.
While change won’t happen overnight, I believe it has the potential to save lives. The problem extends beyond just trucking; it’s entrenched in multiple sectors.
Liberals often react strongly when immigrants seek work and get deported, but have they stopped to consider how challenging it is for legal businesses to compete against illegal labor?
The dynamic is troubling: illegal workers typically earn lower wages and don’t have proper workers’ compensation insurance. In any normal discussion, progressives might criticize business owners for being exploitative, which feels a bit hypocritical here.
There’s a growing sense of frustration that we have two sets of rules—one for American citizens and another for illegal immigrants. The narrative pushed by some Democrats that illegal immigrants can only be deported if they commit violent crimes is simply misguided.
Amidst these issues, Americans feel increasingly weary. Under President Biden, the influx of undocumented immigrants included promises of support like cell phones and accommodations, while countless citizens struggled to meet their own basic needs.
It’s concerning how progressives often impose high taxes and strict regulations on lawful businesses, yet ignore the illegal activities of immigrants. This includes everything from selling counterfeit goods to causing fatal accidents on our roads.
The current discourse around immigration tends to focus on assimilation, which goes beyond just speaking English or knowing cultural touchstones. It’s about adhering to a collective set of rules, which seems overlooked by some on the far left.
The grim reality is that while some argue that deporting millions is impractical, enforcing existing rules could lead to voluntary departures among illegal immigrants.
We cannot restore the lives lost because of policy failures, yet we must strive to ensure others aren’t added to that tragic tally. It’s time to shut down illegal driving schools, outlaw unauthorized labor markets, and verify the backgrounds of workers across the board.
Perhaps if we approach these issues with fairness and diligence, we can prevent such heartbreaking accidents from becoming an unfortunate norm.
