Jonathan Turley Highlights Interesting Detail in Announcement Regarding J6 Pipe Bomber Suspect

Comments on Recent Arrest for Pipe Bomb Incident

Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, expressed surprise on Thursday regarding federal officials’ remarks that there was no particularly “interesting” new evidence in the case concerning a man accused of setting a pipe bomb in Washington, D.C., on January 5, 2021.

The Department of Justice announced the arrest of Brian Cole, facing charges related to the transportation and attempted malicious destruction of an explosive device. Turley shared his thoughts on “America Report” with co-hosts Sandra Smith and John Roberts, mentioning that the Trump administration has approached this case “very cautiously and thoughtfully.”

“I thought the most intriguing aspect of the press conference was the assertion that this was an old case, with nothing new uncovered, and that the critical evidence had merely been overlooked,” Turley noted. “If that holds true, it would reflect poorly on the previous administration. You have to give some credit to the current administration for their commitment to pursuing this individual, and I believe they have followed through on that.”

During the press conference, Attorney General Pam Bondi, who announced Cole’s arrest, informed reporters that no fresh evidence or witnesses had emerged to aid in solving the case. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that the pipe bomb incident is among several investigations slated for the Biden administration in May.

“It’s frustrating for all of us, but we commend their caution,” Turley commented. “They have brought the appropriate charges related to explosive use in interstate commerce, establishing a necessary federal basis. This is just a starting point. More charges are likely forthcoming. The strategy seems to involve beginning with a clearly defined crime.”

Roberts inquired whether additional charges might be anticipated in the future. Turley humorously predicted, “I assure you, they will find ways to expand the charges. They’ll do everything they can in going after this man. This case illustrates how the Department of Justice intends to build on the evidence available. The press conference hinted at more serious charges, considering how he instilled fear in the public.”
