Rangers’ Defense Leads the Charge in Win Against Senators

OTTAWA, Ontario — On Thursday night, the Rangers showcased a surprising strength: their defense stepped up in a big way.

With a 4-2 victory over the Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre, the team tallied its fifth win in the last six games—a promising streak in what has been a solid season for them.

Notably, two of the goals came straight from the defense, which seemed to realize the urgency to contribute more after losing their top defender, Adam Fox, for the time being.

In fact, out of the seven goals scored in the first couple of games without Fox, four were netted by the defense.

To give some context, the Rangers defense had only managed nine goals during the first 27 games of the season—excluding Fox’s contributions, of course.

With Fox sidelined until at least Christmas, Vladislav Gavrikov has really taken it upon himself to elevate his game. He netted his second goal in as many games during the Thursday matchup, tying his career-high with six points as the season progresses.

Alongside Gavrikov, Carson Soucy and Will Borgen contributed the final two goals during a second period that saw the Rangers maintain control.

As it stands, the Rangers rank fifth in the NHL for goals scored by defensemen, with a total of 16.

The game started off strong for the Rangers, who jumped to a 2-0 lead less than halfway through the first period.

Artemi Panarin initiated an odd-man rush by digging the puck along the boards, bouncing it off Mika Zibanejad and JT Miller. In transition, Zibanejad managed to fend off Senators goaltender Levi Melilainen, scoring his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

As the game progressed, Gavrikov further solidified his positioning by scoring at the 9:45 mark, placing the puck into the far corner for his third goal in four games.

The Senators capitalized on power plays, managing to score both of their goals while on the man advantage, narrowing the Rangers’ lead to just one.

In a late-game effort, after Dylan Cozens had a shot blocked, Senators captain Brady Tkachuk fired a one-timer that was deflected by Drake Batherson, making it a tighter contest as the game drew to a close.

However, Panarin found the net again with an empty shot, ensuring the Rangers secured the win.
