Kansas Former 'Teacher of the Month' Manipulated Boy for Sex, Appeared at His Workplace After He Ended Contact

A former Teacher of the Month from Kansas is facing serious allegations for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. Reports indicate that she later attempted to terminate the relationship while at work.

Nicole Hernandez, known as Nikki Baird, has been charged with four felonies related to “illegal sexual intercourse with a student.” This came after police received tips about her social media activity, suggesting that the 30-year-old art teacher from Wichita North High School engaged in illicit conduct with the teen.

An affidavit obtained by local media revealed that the principal, Christina Murray, had previously been alerted to concerns regarding Baird spending excessive time with the student during the current school year.

The newspaper reported that another school administrator had attempted to manage these concerns internally, but it’s unclear how they were resolved.

During the police investigation, Baird reportedly confessed to becoming “too close” with the student, admitting that their emotional connection had “crossed the line.” Initially, she claimed their relationship began after the student graduated, but she later revised her statement, indicating it started while he was still enrolled in school.

Court documents clarify that all four charges were related to interactions that occurred prior to the student’s graduation.

Baird had known the boy for several years, as he was also a middle school art teacher. Allegedly, he described how she befriended him and isolated him from peers during his early school years, before their relationship became sexual in early 2024.

The victim noted that Baird would reach out to him via his personal phone, discussing her marital problems, massaging her back and shoulders, hugging, and eventually sending love letters.

One letter reportedly expressed, “I hope and pray that I will have the opportunity to be with you someday… I know that I love you.”

By his senior year, the two began meeting off campus, with the boy’s mother permitting visits to an arts center where they shared hand-holding for the first time, according to police.

Back at school, she allegedly pressured him multiple times about whether he “wanted me to kiss him,” leading to escalating physical contact, including kisses on his neck and lips, as noted in the affidavit.

The boy, though nervous, ultimately consented to this progression, as indicated in the documents which also mentioned Baird advising him to “act normally” during the grooming phase.

On graduation night, the underage boy stated that Baird asked him to meet her in a neighborhood for sexual activity in her car. He described feeling apprehensive but said the teacher reassured him, stating, “It’s okay because the ceremony is over,” leading to an affirmative reply from him.

Following these events, it is alleged that she attempted to offer him alcohol, which he declined.

Content analyzed from a now-deleted Facebook post revealed that Baird had previously been recognized as ‘Teacher of the Month’ at her former school in 2020.

Despite the school year ongoing, police claimed she continued to meet students in her vehicle, pursuing sexual encounters.

Baird is also accused of sending explicit images of herself, some of which she retained, knowing they could serve as evidence of her actions.

The inappropriate conduct reportedly persisted even after the school year concluded; however, the boy became aware that their relationship was inappropriate and eventually ceased communication.

After this, Baird allegedly began to visit his workplace, leaving candy in his car parked in the driveway.

Authorities mention that the boy eventually disclosed the situation to his family, providing nude photos as proof.

Baird was arrested on May 22 and released after posting a $50,000 bail. A court arraignment is set for December 19.

Interestingly, her name has since been removed from the staff directory of Wichita North High School.
