Georgia Teacher Charged with Sexual Relationship with Student
A married high school English teacher in Georgia has been charged with engaging in a sexual relationship with an underage student, potentially facing up to 25 years in prison.
Paulina Walden, 35, from Savannah, was arrested after school authorities reported to the police that she had “inappropriate sexual relations with a student.” The police confirmed the allegations in a statement.
Walden faces charges of inappropriate sexual conduct and child sexual abuse, which, under Georgia law, carry significant penalties of up to 25 years in prison along with a fine of $100,000.
This incident is yet another example of sexual misconduct by educators, an issue researchers have termed an “epidemic” in the United States over the last two decades, according to a recent investigation.
Details regarding the case have been sparse, with police stating that the alleged activities took place off school grounds.
Walden, who also contributed to the drama program at Jenkins High School, was taken into custody shortly after classes ended last Friday. Reports indicate that her husband is also a teacher at the same school.
She began working in the district in 2023 and was involved in various extracurricular activities, including theater and coaching the dance and flag teams.
Currently, she is being held without bail at the Chatham County Detention Center.
Research into sexual misconduct by educators reveals that it occurs across a range of school systems, and one expert noted that the scale of the problem is significantly higher than the recent scandals within the Catholic Church.
