Thomas Markle, Meghan Markle’s estranged father, recently had part of his left leg amputated after a serious medical emergency in the Philippines. He was taken to a hospital in Cebu on Wednesday, where he underwent a three-hour surgery that was deemed essential for his survival.
At 81 years old, Thomas faced complications from a blood clot that led to dangerous changes in the color of his leg. His son, Thomas Markle Jr., shared with a news outlet that his father’s leg turned blue, then black, in a very short time. He expressed his admiration for his father’s courage during this ordeal.
Markle Jr. explained that medical professionals informed them that amputation was necessary to prevent his father’s death. Even after the surgery, there are concerns about whether it was sufficient for his recovery.
Currently, Thomas is stable but remains in intensive care, under close observation for potential infections that could arise post-surgery. His son noted that doctors indicated the next few days would be critical, as the condition of his father’s leg was dire—blackened flesh suggested severe risks like sepsis or gangrene.
Initially, Thomas Jr. rushed his father to a local hospital when he noticed the condition of his leg. They later transferred him to a better-equipped facility for further treatment.
In January, Thomas had relocated from Rosarito, Mexico, hoping to find a more tranquil life, which he sought after years of personal struggles and family drama.
Meghan has been distant from her father since her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018, which was accompanied by significant health issues for Harry, including two heart attacks that interfered with Thomas’s plans to attend Meghan’s wedding.
To this day, Thomas has not met his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet. Meghan hasn’t publicly addressed her father’s health situation.
Samantha Markle, Thomas’s other daughter, has been expressing her support and prayers for her father’s recovery. She described him as resilient but acknowledged the numerous challenges he has faced recently.
“I just hope he has the strength to pull through,” she said, highlighting his past struggles, including two heart attacks and a stroke.
