House Republicans investigate Maryland voter registration following illegal immigrant incident

Maryland’s Voter Rolls Under Scrutiny Following Illegal Registration

Maryland’s voter registration process is facing major scrutiny from House Republicans. This follows the revelation that an illegal immigrant, who served as the superintendent for a large school district in Iowa, fraudulently registered to vote in Maryland. Ian Andre Roberts, not a U.S. citizen, has prompted serious questions regarding the integrity of the state’s voter rolls.

On Thursday, Brian Steil, the chairman of the House Administration Committee, and Laurel Lee, the vice chairman, sent a letter to Jared DeMarinis, the Maryland Elections Commissioner. They are asking for clarity on how Roberts managed to register and vote in Maryland.

Roberts’ voter registration has caught the attention of conservatives, especially after the Maryland County Board of Elections released a redacted version of his voter documents last November. The redactions obscured answers related to his citizenship.

The letter expressed concerns about Maryland’s verification process for citizenship and sought answers to multiple questions about Roberts and the state’s voter vetting procedures. Some specific queries included whether Roberts is still registered to vote in Maryland and details about any ballots he may have cast.

Interestingly, Maryland remains a Democratic-majority state, controlling key governance roles, including the governorship and both chambers of the legislature.

Prior reports indicate that Roberts worked in the Baltimore City Schools for nearly a decade before moving to Iowa. His arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last September raised alarms, revealing that an undocumented immigrant held a prominent role in an educational institution, despite his work permit expiring in 2020.

This led to inquiries regarding Roberts’ criminal record, which dates back to at least 1996, highlighting serious offenses, including drug-related charges. The situation is further complicated by his illegal voter registration, as U.S. federal laws prohibit noncitizens from voting.

In December, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Maryland, alleging failure to provide proper statewide voter registration lists. Republican representatives emphasized that cases like Roberts’ undermine trust in the election process, arguing that such instances illustrate the flaws in the current voter registration system.

In November, a public records request by the American Accountability Foundation sought Roberts’ voter registration documents. However, the response was heavily redacted, prompting further concerns about transparency. The conservative legal group, Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections, even threatened legal action over the redactions, which were later revealed to be a significant concern.

The Maryland State Board of Elections confirmed that Roberts has not voted in any elections, though evidence indicates that noncitizens have registered to vote at least twice in the state.

The elected officials raised alarm over the heavily redacted voter documents, suggesting attempts to obscure issues related to Roberts’ eligibility. Their letter pointed out inaccuracies and failure to verify citizenship during registration processes.

In response, the Prince George’s County Board of Elections reassured that it complies with all election law requirements and is addressing the concerns regarding Roberts’ records. They stated that errors in redacting information had been corrected after appropriate consultation.

Roberts was also charged with criminal offenses related to his status as an illegal alien in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest, marking yet another layer to his troubling background.

Following his arrest, Roberts’ teaching license was revoked, and the district is now pursuing legal action against the executive search firm that was involved in his hiring. While his attorney reviews the situation, serious discussions are ongoing about the implications of his illegal registration on Maryland’s voting integrity and procedures.
