FBI Director Patel criticizes the Biden administration regarding the Capitol pipe bomb incident

FBI Director Critiques Biden Administration’s Investigative Efforts

On Thursday, FBI Director Kash Patel expressed concern over the Biden administration’s approach to the investigation surrounding the pipe bomb planted at the U.S. Capitol on January 5, 2021. In an interview on “Fox News @ Night Now,” he indicated that the previous administration “left evidence” unaddressed for four years without making any substantial progress.

Patel elaborated on the FBI’s current efforts, highlighting the use of cell phone geolocation data to trace potential suspects. He said, “We reviewed cell tower data and the information provided under a search warrant at the time. We were left questioning why phone numbers were wiped, why there was no connection made, and why geolocation data wasn’t adequately created.” He further stated, “This falls under either severe incompetence or willful negligence, neither of which is acceptable.”

Patel’s comments came shortly after the FBI apprehended Brian Cole Jr. from Woodbridge, Virginia. Cole is accused of planting two pipe bombs near the headquarters of both the Republican and Democratic National Committees on January 6, 2021, coinciding with the Capitol riot over the 2020 election results. Patel underscored the failures of the FBI in accomplishing basic law enforcement tasks, saying, “This man planted a bomb in the Capitol on camera, yet the FBI couldn’t find him for four years. That’s entirely unacceptable.”

He noted that investigators reverted to “good cop basics,” reviewing numerous tips and interviews to finally pinpoint the suspect. A significant clue in the investigation was found in the type of sneakers the suspect wore—Nike shoes, which had limited production in the U.S.

“Our cell phone tracking system is excellent for identifying who was in the area, matching height, weight, and sneaker style,” Patel mentioned. He emphasized that many breakthroughs often come from thorough mobile phone analysis.

Patel insisted that building strong evidence was essential for court proceedings. He affirmed their collaborative efforts with the Department of Justice, saying they utilized numerous subpoenas and legal actions to track down the suspect effectively. They conducted a raid on the suspect’s workplace as part of their operation.

On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that Cole had been charged with employing an explosive device. He was taken into custody in Northern Virginia and is set to make his initial court appearance in Washington, D.C. on Friday.
