World Cup: Trump, Tom Brady and others to assist in announcing groupings

FIFA revealed the groupings for the upcoming World Cup on Friday during an event in Washington, DC, that featured a number of high-profile attendees.

Among those present were President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, NFL icon Tom Brady, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, baseball star Aaron Judge, and hockey great Wayne Gretzky.

The participants drew balls with their corresponding country names, assigning countries to each group. Trump, Sheinbaum, and Carney started the process by selecting countries from the pot labeled with their own names.

Brady drew from pot 1, while O’Neal, Judge, and Gretzky drew teams from pots 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

Although the groups were established, six of the 48 teams will not be determined until March 2026, with four spots coming from a 16-team UEFA playoff.

Teams competing for those UEFA playoff spots include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, North Macedonia, Poland, the Republic of Ireland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, and Wales.

The final two spots will be filled through the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff tournament. Teams involved in this tournament include Bolivia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname.
