Jane Fonda Says Warner Bros. Discovery's Sale Poses a 'Risk to Democracy'

Jane Fonda Raises Concerns Over Warner Bros. Discovery Sale

Actress Jane Fonda has expressed that the pending sale of Warner Bros. Discovery poses a significant risk to democracy, highlighting concerns about media consolidation.

In her editorial for Anclara Magazine, Fonda cautioned that the negotiations surrounding the entertainment industry are happening “behind closed doors.” She emphasized the potential dangers, stating that even though she doesn’t know who will purchase Warner Bros., the process itself could be harmful. “The threat of this merger, in any form, is an alarming escalation of an integration crisis that jeopardizes the entire entertainment sector, the public it serves, and potentially the First Amendment,” she remarked.

Fonda elaborated, explaining that regardless of who acquires Warner Bros. Discovery, the implications are evident. Large-scale consolidation could lead to serious consequences for an industry reliant on free expression. She mentioned concerns such as fewer jobs, diminished opportunities for creators, reduced risks in storytelling, and a significant loss of diverse narratives.

Moreover, she suggested that the new ownership could “shrink” unions within the industry, affecting tens of thousands of skilled workers. Yet, she indicated that this might not even be the biggest worry. Fonda voiced apprehensions that former President Trump might further manipulate the media for political gain and censorship—overlooking that the current administration has faced similar criticisms for years.

Citing allegations of undue influence in a recent merger, Fonda expressed fears that the Warner sale might follow a similar pattern, though she did not specify how that might manifest.

“This is not how media companies should operate in a healthy democracy,” she criticized, linking such behavior to authoritarian tactics. She firmly stated that this situation directly threatens the First Amendment.

“Let me be clear: The First Amendment is not partisan. Even conservative figures have raised alarms about the administration’s actions,” she noted, recalling when the FCC chairman was criticized for allegedly threatening a comedian over merger reviews. Fonda stated that it sets a precarious precedent that could silence voices, particularly under a future Democratic administration.

Fonda called for collective action against Trump, warning that without immediate opposition, the industry and democratic values may be in jeopardy. “This fight transcends partisanship. It’s about safeguarding our creativity, our lives, and our fundamental rights,” she asserted.

Fonda concluded with a plea for solidarity, urging others to stand up alongside her. “I chose to stand up, and I hope you will join me,” she said.

This stance brings to mind the memories of many Vietnam veterans, who recall Fonda’s past protests against what they viewed as democratic principles. Her current emphasis on the First Amendment contrasts sharply with those earlier actions, evoking mixed reactions.
