Putin Assures India of Steady Oil Supply and Collaborative Weapons Manufacturing

Putin Promises Oil Supply to India Amid U.S. Pressure

During a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin assured India of “uninterrupted” deliveries of inexpensive oil. This pledge comes despite President Donald Trump’s attempts to pressure India into ceasing its support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, primarily through tariffs.

Putin expressed confidence, stating, “Russia is a reliable supplier of oil, gas, coal, and everything necessary for India’s energy development.” He added that Russia is prepared to continuously provide fuel necessary for India’s growing economy.

In August, Trump introduced a hefty 25% tariff on India’s imports of Russian oil, claiming India’s significant military purchases from Russia, alongside its status as a major energy buyer, undermined global efforts to curb Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Additionally, in October, Trump announced sanctions targeting Russia’s largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, with penalties extending to third parties engaging with them. This led to significant financial repercussions for Russian entities as oil revenues were markedly impacted.

The Modi administration has consistently maintained that it has the right to source oil from various suppliers while criticizing U.S. sanctions, especially as European nations continue purchasing Russian energy. Putin echoed this sentiment during his visit, noting that the U.S. continues to import Russian uranium.

Nevertheless, amidst the tough rhetoric, purchases of Russian oil by India have noticeably dropped due to the effects of U.S. tariffs and sanctions. Current forecasts suggest that India’s crude oil imports could reach a three-year low by December.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that this decline might be temporary and not significantly impactful in the long run. He suggested that Russia is exploring options to circumvent U.S. sanctions to allow India to resume its heavy oil purchases.

Peskov remarked that Russia possesses “extensive experience” in navigating such sanctions and possesses unique technologies to adapt. He asserted that if the economic benefits from continued purchases exceed the losses from tariffs, it would make sense for India to persist in buying oil.

In an interview with Russian state media, Peskov referred to India as a “great buyer of Russian oil,” highlighting potential profits India stands to gain from discounted Russian products. He remained optimistic about the advantages of Russian-Indian cooperation outweighing the challenges posed by U.S. sanctions.

At the Russia-India Business Forum, Putin noted that discussions would extend beyond energy to explore various opportunities for collaboration. He observed that Modi has frequently outlined India’s vast, yet underutilized growth prospects.

One potential area for collaboration identified is fertilizer. Russia has announced plans to supply up to 5.5 million tons of fertilizer to India by 2025, aiming to secure a notable share of India’s import market.

Furthermore, both leaders issued a joint statement detailing plans for joint production of spare parts and defense equipment for Russian-origin military platforms, including the transfer of defense technology to India. This prospect raises concerns among those wary of the proliferation of Russian weapons and poses challenges for U.S. and European efforts to reduce India’s military dependence on Russia.

Modi expressed gratitude towards Putin for Russia’s steadfast commitment to India’s energy security, calling it a strong foundation for bilateral relations. To express appreciation for Russian cooperation in oil and military support, Modi announced plans for visa-free travel for tourist groups for 30 days.

Amid ongoing global tensions, Modi stated that despite the difficulties of the past 80 years, the friendship between India and Russia remains stable and rooted in mutual respect. As a point of contention, he highlighted India’s advocacy for peace regarding the Ukraine conflict, while continuing its substantial oil imports from Russia.

Additionally, Modi asserted that the partnership between Russia and India in combating terrorism might balance the global stability threats posed by the invasion of Ukraine. He drew attention to recent terrorist attacks in India as examples of shared security challenges between the two nations.
