Canadian Politician Arrested for Intimidation
Last summer, a political figure in Canada found himself in serious trouble after allegedly leaving an intimidating voicemail for a potential mayoral candidate. Ontario MP Corinna Traill was arrested this Wednesday and faces two counts related to intimidation, according to the local police in Peterborough, Ontario.
Back in September, Tom Dingwall, who had considered running for mayor, posted on Facebook that Traill had left him a message in August urging him not to pursue his candidacy. The message apparently aimed to clear the path for her friend to run instead.
The lawsuit details alarming threats, stating that Dingwall claimed, “Mr. Trail made it very clear that if I didn’t do that, he would come to my house, kill me, sexually assault my wife, and then sexually assault me again.” He called for Traill to step down, emphasizing that no elected official should ever threaten constituents like that, especially to benefit their friends.
In response to the accusations, Traill denied leaving any such voicemail. In a Facebook post from September, she stated, “I want to be clear: I did not create this message. I’ve received information that artificial intelligence technology is involved.” She claimed that while part of the voicemail included her voice, other portions were generated artificially. At the time, she indicated that her team was looking into the origin of the message.
Traill has been a public servant for over a decade, asserting her commitment to represent her community and ensure decisions align with the residents’ values. Despite the controversy, she reaffirmed her dedication to her constituents.
Reportedly released on her own recognizance, Traill is set to appear in court again in January, as confirmed by the police department.
