Kentucky Wildcats Struggling Despite Fan Frustration

One of Kentucky’s most notable alumni has voiced what many fans are feeling as frustration grows with the team’s performance.

After suffering back-to-back defeats, including a significant loss to No. 11 Gonzaga, the Wildcats have now lost three of their last five games, with the most recent score being 94-59.

When Kentucky trailed 43-20 at halftime, the crowd made their displeasure known by booing the team.

DeMarcus Cousins, who is currently out of the NBA, shared his concerns regarding the team’s state on social media. He reflected on a time when he played for the Wildcats, pointing out the stark contrast. “I can’t lie…this UK team has no heart!” he remarked, recalling his days when the team went 35-3 yet fell in the Elite Eight. “This is hard to watch.”

Some joked about Cousins potentially having three years of eligibility left, suggesting he could return to help the program, which prompted an eye-roll emoji from the four-time All-Star.

Kentucky’s coach, Mike Pope, responded to Cousins’ comments, acknowledging both his and the fanbase’s frustration with the Wildcats’ current 5-4 record. “As a former player, I’m also angry at the coach, and rightly so. There was nothing inappropriate in what he said,” he stated to the media.

Pope, who took over for John Calipari, had a decent first season, finishing 24-12 and reaching the Sweet 16. However, this season has seen issues, especially on offense against stronger teams, like scoring only 66 points against Michigan State and 64 against North Carolina State.

The game against Gonzaga highlighted these struggles, with Kentucky missing their first ten shots and their initial seven three-pointers. Overall, they managed a dismal shooting percentage of 26.7%, struggling even further from beyond the arc at 20.6%.

“All of the boos that we heard tonight were very deserved, mostly to me, and we have to make it right,” Pope acknowledged.

The Wildcats are set to face former coach Rick Pitino and St. John’s in Atlanta on December 20, but first, they will aim to recover against North Carolina Central this Tuesday.
