Trusty Shines in World Cup Match Despite Loss

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — As the sold-out crowd of 70,492 filled the stadium, many fans were still finding their seats or in line for refreshments. Conversations buzzed with excitement about the upcoming World Cup game, yet they had no idea what was about to unfold.

Then, suddenly, Auston Trustee emerged on the scene.

With a corner kick from Sebastian Berhalter arcing toward the back post, Trusty made his move. The ball landed right at his left foot. A quick touch, and he deftly slotted it into the net, marking the first goal of the match.

The crowd erupted as the U.S. took an early lead against Turkey just 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the match—making it the second-fastest goal ever for the United States in a FIFA World Cup.

In the stands, actor Brad Pitt was seen celebrating alongside his “Fight Club” co-star Edward Norton.

Trusty, meanwhile, celebrated on the field by sprinting toward the bench, reminiscent of his first professional goal with the Philadelphia Union eight years prior.

“Scoring in this World Cup is truly an honor,” Trusty reflected after the U.S. fell 3-2 to Turkey. “It felt like a dream come true. I didn’t plan for that celebration, but it felt like a full-circle moment.”

With that goal, Trusty became the first player from the Philadelphia Union to score in a FIFA World Cup, a feat that took nearly 15 years to achieve.

Trusty’s story began near Media, Pennsylvania, where soccer was deeply rooted in his family. As the youngest of six kids, he grew up in a household where collegiate soccer was the norm. His older sister Oney even played for the U.S. Women’s Youth National Team. Watching her compete inspired Trusty, sparking his aspiration to represent his country one day.

He joined the Philadelphia Union’s youth system in 2011 as one of the original Union juniors and climbed through the club’s academy, ultimately becoming the fifth homegrown player to sign with the team, starting a total of 56 games with the first team.

Since then, Trusty’s career has taken him through various levels of professional soccer—stints with Arsenal, Birmingham City, Sheffield United, and currently Celtic, where he recently celebrated winning the Scottish Premiership title.

Thursday’s match encapsulated his journey, with all those moments converging in a breathtaking play early in the game.

“I live and breathe every inch of it,” Trusty said with a chuckle. “I got my chance, and I made the most of it. I’m really glad I scored.”

Turkey, however, found the net in stoppage time during their final possession, sealing a surprising victory. The moment was bittersweet for Trusty, who had just injured his ankle but couldn’t exit the field to fortify his defense.

“I twisted my ankle quite badly and had a hamstring cramp as well. I stayed in because there were no substitutions left,” he explained. “It’s frustrating to lose this way, but we have to move forward. We won in the group stage, so there’s that positive. We need to learn from this and keep going.”

While results may fade as the knockout stage approaches, Trusty’s goal will be etched in memory.

In a remarkable moment in his hometown, a boy from suburban Philadelphia scored a piece of American soccer history. It served as a reminder that World Cup dreams aren’t solely for the stars but also for defenders who relentlessly chase opportunities from corner kicks.
