Cowboys Coach Addresses Feud Involving Star Receiver
Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has promised to step in after a clash between one of his top wide receivers and a former NFL cornerback sparked some tension.
Following their recent loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday, which dropped the Cowboys’ season record to 6-6-1, the team’s playoff chances are looking uncertain. The game ended with a score of 44-30. During the Prime Video broadcast, Richard Sherman, a former Seattle Seahawks player and now analyst, suggested that George Pickens seemed “uninterested” and appeared indifferent during the game.
In response, Pickens took to social media to hit back at Sherman’s comments with a flurry of insults. Though he later removed the post, the incident prompted Schottenheimer to state that he planned to discuss the matter with Pickens.
“I am aware of what was allegedly released,” Schottenheimer said to reporters on Friday. “I haven’t spoken with him yet. I understand it has been deleted, but I’ll definitely talk to him just to check in. This sort of thing is something we deal with in this profession.”
In the Thursday game, Pickens only managed 37 receiving yards. Typically known for his ability to stretch the field, he didn’t connect on any passes longer than 10 yards—a first for the season.
In his post, Pickens criticized Sherman for not considering the Lions’ defensive strategy, remarking, “Funny because I thought a former player would know.” To which Sherman had retorted, “Who’s SHH without the Corps of Boom?”
After the game, Pickens acknowledged he could have done better. “Personally, I can’t just disappear,” he said, hinting that he faced extra attention from the Lions’ defense after star receiver CeeDee Lamb sustained a head injury.
Upon reviewing tape from the game, Schottenheimer disagreed with the notion that Pickens didn’t give enough effort. He pointed out that it wasn’t just Pickens who fell short in performance or coaching that night.
“I don’t think any of us coached or played well enough,” Schottenheimer noted. “Overall, I’m going to judge George based on his entire body of work. He’s proven himself to be an elite player and a game changer, without a doubt.”
Pickens, who previously played three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, joined the Cowboys during the offseason. In just 13 games this season, he has already achieved new career highs in both receiving yards and touchdowns.
