Factors contributing to Karl-Anthony Towns' better defense

Mike Brown Defends Karl-Anthony Towns’ Defense

Mike Brown recently stood up for Karl-Anthony Towns, who often faces criticism for his perceived lack of effort, particularly on defense. Observers frequently point out that his lateral speed can be a concern, especially when he’s slow to recover or move down the court.

However, in a game against the Knicks and Jazz at Madison Square Garden, Brown saw some promising signs in Towns’ defensive play. “KAT, he’s long,” Brown noted. “He moves his feet better than people think. He’s got a good awareness on the court. Lately, when he uses his length correctly, he really alters the game. He sets a sort of barrier and lets shooters try their luck. If they score, he just doesn’t dwell on it—he shifts his focus to the next play. This approach really boosts our defense in the paint.”

Interestingly, Towns has been primarily playing as a center lately, which seems to suit him better. Being closer to the paint allows him to focus more on defense, rather than having to extend his efforts beyond the three-point line as he would if he were playing power forward.

In contrast, Mitchell Robinson has been coming off the bench for his last five games, allowing Towns to take on more of a center role.

Looking ahead, Sunday’s match against the Magic at Madison Square Garden could be pivotal for the Knicks. They’ve had a rough start to the season, dropping their first two games, and the last loss was particularly troubling, with Franz Wagner lighting them up for 37 points during a 133-121 defeat in Orlando.

Currently, the Magic hold the fourth position in the Eastern Conference, just 1.5 games behind the second-place Knicks.

As for Towns, he is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game due to a left calf strain.

This upcoming game will also see the Knicks wearing their City Edition jerseys, complemented by matching court designs.
