Trump’s Regret Over Cuellar Pardon

Last Wednesday, President Trump voiced his frustration regarding his controversial pardon of Congressman Henry Cuellar, especially as polls indicated Cuellar’s plans to run for re-election as a Democrat.

Cuellar, representing Texas, is currently facing serious charges, including federal bribery, money laundering, and acting as a foreign agent, allegedly linked to receiving $600,000 from an oil company owned by Azerbaijan and a Mexican bank.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump complained, “Just a short time after signing the pardon, Congressman Henry Cuellar announced that he is running for Congress again as a Democrat in Great Texas (the state where I received the highest number of votes in history!).” He added, “That kind of lack of loyalty isn’t going to sit well with Texas voters or Henry’s daughters. Well, next time, no more Mr. Nice Guy!”

Trump’s decision to pardon Cuellar, a centrist Democrat known for his pro-life stance, baffled many within the Republican Party. This seat in Texas’ 28th Congressional District is considered one of the key contests by House Democrats, according to political analysts.

Cuellar has faced numerous electoral challenges since 2004 and is a figure who previously voted for Trump’s impeachment during his first term. Following the pardon, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries commended Trump, saying he believed the indictment against Cuellar was weak and complimenting the outcome of the pardon.

Trump revealed his choice to pardon Cuellar by sharing a letter from the congressman’s daughters that appealed for their father’s clemency. They claimed that Cuellar’s vocal opposition to former President Biden’s border policies may have led to the charges he faces.

According to federal allegations, from 2014 to 2021, Cuellar accepted bribes through dubious consulting contracts involving companies owned by his wife, who allegedly did little real work.

After Trump announced the pardon, Cuellar quickly confirmed his re-election intentions, reflecting a readiness to continue his political career. Trump went on to denounce Democrats, stating, “Democrats are bad and it’s all because Henry wanted border security so badly! He was against illegal aliens coming into our country completely unchecked and unvetted.”

In his postings, Trump recalled receiving touching letters from Cuellar’s daughters and mentioned how he had never interacted with the family before but felt compelled to assist the families of those facing significant challenges.
