Luigi Mangione’s Arrest Evidence Released
New York City prosecutors have disclosed new photographic evidence related to the arrest of Luigi Mangione, who is suspected of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. This evidence was revealed on Saturday night.
The exhibit includes a photo of a USB drive that Mangione wore as a necklace at the time of his arrest, alongside a bus ticket to Pittsburgh, and a handwritten note containing a shopping list as well as a “to do” list. There was also a pocket knife with a zip tie attached. Other images displayed clothing items he had, like a green and black jacket, a beanie, a scarf, black pants, gloves, long underwear, shoes, and a medical mask.
Mangione was taken into custody on December 9, 2024, after bystanders at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, called 911, believing he resembled a person of interest in the Thompson case.
Death Penalty Consideration
Federal prosecutors have formally indicated their intent to seek the death penalty for Mangione.
In court last week, Mangione’s defense sought to suppress evidence seized from his backpack following his arrest, along with statements he allegedly made during the McDonald’s incident and later conversations with prison guards.
They argued that police violated Mangione’s Fifth Amendment rights by obtaining statements without proper protocol, and that the search of his belongings infringed on his Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches.
Prosecutors maintain that the police acted lawfully, asserting that such warrantless searches after an arrest are standard practice. They also pointed out that the most relevant statement not regulated by courtesy was Mangione providing a false identity when he showed a fake ID to the officer.
Details from the 911 Call
During a multi-day evidentiary hearing, prosecutors presented, for the first time, the 911 call that spurred Mangione’s arrest. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office made this announcement recently.
A manager from the Planck Road McDonald’s reported to the dispatcher that there was a customer who looked suspiciously like the shooter from New York.
As the call concluded, the dispatcher advised the manager to stay alert and monitor Mangione, stating, “Officers are on their way for you. Keep an eye on him. If he leaves, please call me back and let me know. Okay?”
