Trump Supports Clemens for Hall of Fame Induction
Former President Donald Trump recently expressed his backing for Roger Clemens as the new candidates for the Baseball Hall of Fame were announced. Clemens, renowned for his impressive career, is on the ballot put forth by the Modern Baseball Era Committee, which looks at players who significantly contributed to the game since 1980. Despite his accolades, he has yet to gain admission via votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America.
The list of nominees this year includes notable figures like Barry Bonds and Carlos Delgado, as well as Jeff Kent, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Gary Sheffield, and Fernando Valenzuela. Each member of the 16-person voting committee can select up to three candidates, and a 75% approval rate is necessary for induction into the Hall of Fame.
Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, describing Clemens’ journey as akin to a “witch hunt,” referencing the legal troubles he faced. “He was acquitted of all charges!!! If he is not inducted into the Hall of Fame, Major League Baseball should face consequences,” Trump stated. He also highlighted the role of the Obama administration in Clemens’ legal challenges.
Clemens missed the cut last year, receiving 65.2% of the necessary votes. His last appearance on the mound in the MLB was in 2007 with the Yankees. His career, however, was marred by allegations surrounding performance-enhancing drugs, leading to a federal investigation. Clemens testified before Congress, denying any wrongdoing and was ultimately acquitted of lying.
Trump reiterated his support for Clemens’ Hall of Fame induction, emphasizing his exceptional track record, which includes 354 wins and multiple Cy Young Awards. “Roger Clemens is one of the greatest pitchers ever,” he remarked.
The Hall of Fame Committee is set to vote soon on the new inductees, creating anticipation among fans and players alike. Many argue that Clemens’ accomplishments speak for themselves, overshadowed only by unproven allegations. He concluded his career with significant milestones that have left many fans advocating for his recognition in Cooperstown.
Clemens earned seven Cy Young Awards, was named MVP once, and was an All-Star on eleven occasions throughout his career.
