Food influencer Michael Duarte spoke about his previous mental health challenges and rehab shortly before he was shot and killed by police.

A Texas police shooting last month resulted in the death of Instagram food influencer Michael Duarte, who had recently shared an “insane” post about his mental health struggles and rehabilitation.

Duarte, 36, opened up about his challenges in an Instagram post on October 25, just weeks before his shooting on November 12.

In his emotional message, he reflected on the difficulties he faced during the COVID-19 lockdown, stating, “I hit a breaking point, had a mental health crisis, and ended up in rehab.”

He noted that the pandemic had taken a toll on him, leading to feelings of failure and diminished self-confidence.

The specifics of his mental health journey and rehab remain somewhat vague.

Combining his present struggles with reflections on a tough childhood—raised by a single mother—Duarte shared that she faced her own battles with breast cancer during his teenage years.

“She was my everything,” he expressed, recounting memories of fishing and hunting together, highlighting her immense support despite her limitations.

After losing his mother when he was 21, he found solace in cooking, which eventually helped him to overcome some of his hardships after rehabilitation.

In a twist of fate, as he seemed to be turning his life around—gaining over a million followers on his Instagram account, “foodwithbearhands”—he faced imminent tragedy.

His lively videos captured his charismatic personality and incredible barbecue dishes, and he had just celebrated his ninth wedding anniversary with his wife in early November. They often shared heartwarming family moments featuring their young daughter and beloved dog.

However, tragedy struck just days after the anniversary celebration while the couple was driving through West Texas.

Duarte was shot by law enforcement in Castroville following reports of a man behaving erratically with a knife.

Police stated that Duarte exhibited erratic behavior and made threats. Upon the deputy’s arrival, he was allegedly trying to attack emergency responders.

As tensions escalated, Duarte reportedly lunged at an officer, shouting threats, which resulted in the deputy firing two shots, leading to Duarte’s death after being transported to a hospital.

In the wake of her husband’s death, Jessica, Duarte’s wife, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support from his followers, emphasizing the challenge of coping with this loss. She shared her belief that Duarte’s purpose could be unfolding in ways she hadn’t anticipated, bringing a sense of peace to their family.
