Saints Edge Out Buccaneers in Rainy Showdown
The New Orleans Saints celebrated a close 24-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a rainy Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. This game was significant, especially given the Buccaneers’ opportunity to gain ground in the NFC South race, entering it with a 7-5 record, while the Panthers were enjoying a bye week at 7-6 after their recent win against the Rams.
Rookie quarterback Tyler Schau was a key player for the Saints against a backdrop of their struggling 2-10 record. Interestingly, both the Buccaneers and Panthers entered Week 15 with a 7-6 record, highlighting the competitiveness in the division.
Schau’s standout moment came with his legs rather than his arm; his first career touchdown run was essential to sealing the victory for New Orleans. In a pivotal fourth-quarter scenario, with the score tied at 17-17, Schau executed a swift escape, much to the surprise of those watching. He darted to the left and, finding a clear path, rushed 13 yards for a touchdown that ultimately decided the game.
On defense, the Saints held their ground, forcing the Buccaneers to settle for a field goal during a promising drive. After some strategic clock management, New Orleans managed to negate Baker Mayfield’s efforts, pushing Tampa Bay to the brink of defeat.
Tight end Cade Otton couldn’t secure a key 4th-and-4, putting the Saints back in possession. Meanwhile, rookie running back Devin Neal performed admirably in place of the injured Alvin Kamara, notching a touchdown and 70 rushing yards. Schau ended the game with 144 passing yards, alongside a rushing effort of 55 yards, but he did throw one interception.
Mayfield had a tough outing, completing only 14 of his 30 attempts for 122 yards, with one touchdown and another interception. Bucky Irving contributed with a touchdown catch and 55 rushing yards; however, Sean Tucker also added a 1-yard touchdown run for Tampa Bay.
The game could have swayed differently had Mayfield connected with rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka during a late drive aimed at tying the score. The opportunity was there, but the catch eluded Egbuka, who finished with just two receptions for 26 yards. Chris Godwin led the Bucs in receiving, tallying 55 yards on five catches.
